US China Trade War: Donald Trump said tariffs on China were not effective. He confirmed the meeting with Xi Jinping and expressed hope that after the meeting, trade tensions between Washington and Beijing will reduce.

Washington. US President Donald Trump has said that the tariffs imposed on China are “not effective”. Tensions have increased between Washington and Beijing ahead of his expected meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the next 14 days. Days after claiming there was “no reason” to meet Xi, Trump confirmed the meeting would take place, signaling a possible easing of trade tensions between the two countries.
Trump, who last week announced 100 percent tariffs on all Chinese imports, acknowledged in an interview with Fox Business that such a move could not continue indefinitely. When asked about the tariff measures imposed by both countries this year, he said, “It is not sustainable, but the numbers are this – it can be sustained, but they forced me to do it.” He said he hoped things would be “okay” with China after his meeting with Xi.
‘China is always looking for an edge’
During the interview, Trump said, “China is always looking for an edge. I don’t know what’s going to happen. We’ll see what happens.” The trade dispute between the two countries has increased the US import tax on Chinese goods to 145 percent, increasing concerns of a global economic recession. However, both sides agreed to a multiple 90-day ceasefire, which is set to expire on November 10 unless extended.
‘We have to make a fair compromise’
Last week, Trump threatened to impose additional tariffs by November 1 and also considered canceling a meeting with Xi Jinping, scheduled to take place during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in South Korea later this month.
Trump said of Xi Jinping, “I have a good relationship with him. I think our relationship with China will be fine, but we have to make a fair deal. It has to be fair.” When asked about the possibility of a trade war with China if no deal was reached, Trump said, “Look, now you’re in a war. We have 100 percent tariffs. If we didn’t have tariffs, we would be nothing.”
