Donald Trump: US President Donald Trump has once again suffered a court setback. On Thursday, a federal appeals court rejected the Trump administration’s petition to lift a lower court ban on deploying National Guard troops to Chicago. The decision comes amid growing protests against Trump’s harsh immigration policies, as the administration tried to justify military deployment in the city.
The statement issued by the appeals court clearly stated that the spirited, prolonged and sometimes violent actions of protesters against the federal government’s immigration policies and actions do not create a threat of insurrection against the government. The court added that the administration will continue to be barred from deploying the US National Guard in Illinois. This ban will remain in effect until at least October 23, unless Judge April Perry decides to extend it. The lawsuit, filed by the state of Illinois and the city of Chicago, is a major challenge against Trump’s domestic military deployment.
Donald Trump is not a king
Democratic Governor JB Pritzker responded to Ax saying that Donald Trump is not a king and his administration is not above the law. The court confirmed that there was no credible evidence of rebellion in Illinois. The National Guard has no place on the streets of American cities. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also called it a victory for democracy.
This is not the first time Trump’s National Guard policies have been challenged. Democratic-ruled California filed a lawsuit this year against the troop deployment in Los Angeles, where troops were sent to quell protests over a federal immigration crackdown. The lower court there declared the deployment illegal, but the appeals court temporarily halted it. Similarly, Oregon adopted a strategy to block sending troops to Portland. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals is considering Trump’s petition there, where the judges indicated they would discount the president’s decision.
