A history-making moment has come for the Sikh community in New York City. The intersection of 114th Street and 101st Avenue in the Queens area of America has been officially named ‘Guru Teg Bahadur Ji Marg Way’. This is the first time that a place outside India has been named after the ninth Guru of Sikhism, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. This intersection holds special significance not only locally but also at the global level, because it is here that the famous Gurdwara Baba Makhan Shah Lubana is located, which is considered the spiritual center of the Sikh population of South Richmond Hill.

This region is also fondly called ‘Little Punjab’, where a glimpse of Indian culture is visible in every street. New York City Council member Lynn Shulman, who introduced the proposal, said the renaming is a tribute to the immortal teachings of Guru Teg Bahadur Ji and his sacrifice for humanity. He said in the City Council meeting – ‘Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji was not just a religious guru, but a poet, philosopher and warrior, who made the supreme sacrifice for freedom of religion, human rights and justice.’

Hundreds of people attended the inauguration

Shulman said that ‘his messages of compassion, equality and humanity still guide the world today.’ Hundreds of people from the Sikh community, local leaders and officials were present at the inauguration ceremony, including Assembly Member Jennifer Rajkumar, who played a key role in taking the initiative forward. During the ceremony, the board of ‘Guru Teg Bahadur Ji Marg’ was unveiled and devotees remembered Guru Ji’s teachings with prayers.

This event is being described as a ‘global milestone’ in Sikh history, which honors the culture, spirit of service and contribution of the Sikhs. The name of this road is not just a sign, but it is a symbol of the idea that Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji gave – freedom of all religions, human dignity and the courage to speak the truth fearlessly.
