India Origin American Subramanyam Subu Vedam Drug Case Arrest Deport Threat Freed From 40 Years Pennsylvania Prison Murder Case

Such injustice has been done to an Indian-origin person in America that even the goddess of justice would cry. Subramaniam ‘Subu’ Vedam spent 40 years in prison without committing any crime. When he finally got freedom from a prison in Pennsylvania, after a few minutes he was thrown back into the same darkness. As soon as Subu was released from jail, US immigration officials took him into custody again and are now preparing to deport him from the country. Now at the age of 64, Subu has to face such days, which are no less than a nightmare for anyone in old age.

Why was Subu caught while being acquitted?

Subu came out in the month of August this year after serving a sentence without any crime, but even before he could breathe in the open air, he was caught by the American ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). Now preparations are being made to deport him to India. These atrocities on Subu were carried out under an old deportation order pending since the 1980s. Subu, who left India and came to America at the age of just nine months, is now a permanent American resident. The entire family is fighting a legal battle to prevent them from being thrown out of their own country.

That murder case in which one’s entire youth was lost

Let us tell you that this case is related to the murder of 19-year-old Thomas Kinser in 1980. Kinser’s dead body was found in a sinkhole near State College. After investigation, police found that Kinser was last seen with his high school friend Subu. After which he was arrested and Subu continued to declare himself innocent. He was convicted twice of this crime and then sentenced to life in prison without parole. Subu spent his entire adult life in the darkness of jail.

How did you get freedom from the murder case?

There is also a claim in this case that many evidences of Subu’s innocence were hidden by the administration. The investigation revealed that the other party had hidden an FBI report, which could have proved Subu’s innocence. In 2022, new forensic evidence was presented, which made it clear that the bullet wounds found on the body of the deceased did not match the weapon that was presented in court against Subu. He had refused to accept a compromise plea twice in 40 years and maintained his claim of innocence.

Then in 2025, during the hearing of this case in Center County, the judge found that the prosecution had hidden an important FBI report from the defense. Due to lack of solid evidence and further witnesses, the case was dismissed and Subu was proven innocent. After which he became the person serving the longest wrongful sentence in America.

Trapped in drug case

While in jail, Subu did many great things, one of which is literacy program. He helped fellow inmates earn diplomas and himself earned a 4.0 GPA and three MBA degrees through correspondence.

When Subu came out after 40 years after proving his innocence, the immigration officials came to arrest him. The action was taken under an old deportation order when Subu was charged with drug possession (possession and intent to distribute LSD) during his teenage years. This order was dormant during his life sentence but was implemented upon his release. Now he can be deported to India.

‘India deportation will be disastrous’

Subu’s family has said that the decision to deport him to India would be ‘devastating’ as America has been his country since he was nine months old and India is a stranger to him. He doesn’t even know anyone there.
