World’s Most Unusual Schools: World’s 5 most unusual schools
These amazing schools make us think about a lot. It also indicates change. Know which are the 5 most different and out-of-the-box schools in the world.
1. Floating Schools, Bangladesh
Large scale floods occur in Bangladesh during monsoon. This makes it impossible for millions of children to go to school. To deal with this problem, an NGO ‘Shidhulai Svanirbhar Sanstha’ converted boats into schools. These schools operate on solar energy. They are equipped with computers, internet and small libraries. Floating schools pick up children from the banks of the river near their villages and drop them back after completion of classes. This initiative ensured that children’s education is not disrupted despite natural disasters like floods.
2. Cave School of China (Dongzhong Cave School, China)
The Dongzhong Cave School, located near Miao village in Guizhou province of China, was a very strange example. It was established inside a huge natural cave dug by wind, rain and earthquakes over thousands of years. This school started in 1984 and had about 200 students and 8 teachers. At that time the villagers in the remote mountainous area did not have the resources to build a school building. However, later the Chinese government closed it down saying that China is not a part of the ‘caveman society’.
3. Train Platform Schools, India
You will see a different type of class at many railway stations in India. These schools do not run in any building, but on the train platform. This initiative was started by Indurjit Khurana to provide basic education to poor children and beggars who could not go to school. Teachers come to the railway platform every day and teach homeless children. This unique school provides education to children who live on the streets and are away from the traditional education system due to poverty.
4. Abo Elementary School, USA
Abo Elementary School, located in New Mexico, USA, was the first public school in America to be built entirely underground. It was constructed in 1962 during the Cold War, when the risk of nuclear attack was very high. This school not only served as an educational institution, but was also designed as a nuclear fallout shelter. Its concrete roof was a playground for children, while most of the school was underground. This was a unique example of bringing security and education together.
5. Brooklyn Free School of New York (Brooklyn Free School, USA)
Far from a traditional curriculum and strict rules, Brooklyn Free School is famous for its democratic teaching methodology. In this school, students have complete freedom to make their own classes, teachers and even rules. There is no grading system here and attending classes is not mandatory. Children themselves decide what and how they want to study. This school is part of the ‘Democratic Free Schools’ movement, which promotes personal independence and self-directed learning among students.
