A woman living in Nashville, Tennessee, America, has recently given birth to a child who has attracted the attention of the whole world. This woman named Shelby Martin has become a mother for the first time. She gave birth to a healthy baby boy at TriStar Centennial Women’s Hospital. This baby has been named Cassian, whose weight was 12 pounds 14 ounces (about 5.8 kilograms).
Even the doctors were surprised
According to the report, Cassian’s weight was almost double the weight of the average American newborn, which is usually around 7 pounds. In such a situation, even the doctors were surprised to see this giant child. After birth, he was kept in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for a while, where he was given oxygen support and blood sugar monitoring.
Within some time his condition became normal and both were discharged from the hospital. “The way the doctors and nurses took care of me made me feel safe and confident throughout the entire procedure,” Shelby said.
Mother’s story went viral on social media
Shelby Martin’s story quickly went viral on social media. She had already been sharing her pregnancy experiences on TikTok, leaving people in awe of her exceptionally large baby bump.
In one of his videos, he had said jokingly, ‘When people say that their child is big… no one knows bigger than me.’
This video has received more than 44 lakh likes and thousands of comments. Many users jokingly asked if she was going to give birth to ‘a toddler’, while others encouraged her and wished her well. However, in her video, Shelby also talked honestly about the physical pain of pregnancy, emotional challenges and the joy of becoming a mother.
Why are some children so big?
According to doctors, a baby weighing more than 4.5 kg is called macrosomic or ‘jumbo baby’. There could be reasons behind this like genetic reasons, mother’s health, duration of pregnancy and gestational diabetes.
Although most ‘big babies’ are born completely healthy, the risk of complications during delivery is higher. Therefore, in such cases, C-section is often considered a safe option.
