Two killed as cargo plane skids off Hong Kong runway and falls into sea – DW – 10/20/2025

A cargo plane taking off from Dubai skidded off the runway and into the sea while landing at Hong Kong International Airport, the city’s airport operator said on Monday, with local media reporting two deaths.

What do we know about the Hong Kong flight incident?

Hong Kong’s airport authority said the flight was landing at about 3:50 pm (1950 GMT on Sunday).

Four crew members were rescued and taken to hospital. But police said initial reports suggest two people have been confirmed dead on the airport ground vehicle.

Hong Kong’s Civil Aviation Department said in a statement on Monday that the plane “veered off the north runway after landing and fell into the sea.”

“Two ground staff were impacted and fell into the sea, and their conditions are pending confirmation.”

The airport said the north runway has been closed, with the south and middle runways continuing to operate.

Flightradar24 said the plane that ran off the runway in Hong Kong was a Boeing 747 cargo plane.

The flight tracking service posted on Twitter that the plane belonged to AirACT, a Turkish airline that provides extra cargo capacity to major carriers. It was flying from Dubai for Emirates SkyCargo with flight number EK9788.

Emirates said in a statement that flight EK9788, a Boeing 747 cargo aircraft wet-leased and operated by ACT Airlines, was damaged upon landing in Hong Kong on Monday, adding that “the crew has been confirmed safe and there was no cargo
Rider.”
