It has been eight days since the partial government shutdown in America from October 1. The crisis arose because Congress failed to pass a new budget by the September 30 deadline. Democrats are refusing to cooperate in passing the budget unless health insurance subsidies are increased, while Republicans and President Donald Trump want the budget to be passed without these subsidies. So far, no concrete progress has been made towards ending this impasse. Analyst Mr. According to Elliot Morris, opinion polls hold Republicans and Trump more responsible for the shutdown than Democrats by 6 to 17 points.
What is the rating on which issue?
Trump’s net approval on various issues is as follows – on immigration – 4.7, on economy – 15.3, on trade – 15.6, on inflation – 27.4 percent. However, his approval on trade and inflation has increased slightly in the last two weeks. All the seats in the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate seats will be at stake in the midterm elections of November 2026. In Morris’ average poll, Democrats lead Republicans 44.9-42.1. Democrats have been leading by a small margin since April.
In surveys conducted before the shutdown began, Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer’s popularity stood at -20.5, making him the least popular of the six major party leaders (Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance and House leaders of both parties). The reason for Schumer’s low popularity is his weak support among his own voters. There is increasing pressure on him within the party to take a tougher stance against Trump. If the Democrats are seen to be capitulating, Schumer will be held responsible.
stock market rising
There have been 11 government shutdowns in the US since 1980, seven of which lasted five days or less. The longest shutdown (35 days) occurred during Trump’s first term after the 2018 elections, when Democrats gained control of the House of Representatives. Shutdowns are economically damaging, but they usually do not last long enough to cause serious damage. The economy usually gets back on track after the shutdown ends.
Government economic data is not released during these times. For example, employment data for September was supposed to be released last Friday, but now it will be released only after the shutdown is over. Still, the US S&P 500 stock index hit a new record high in Wednesday’s session and is up four percent in the past month. The stock market has supported Trump since recovering from April’s decline.
There is majority, still why shutdown?
Republicans won the House of Representatives 220–215 in the November 2024 elections and currently have a majority of 219–213 (two seats are pending runoffs). A Democratic candidate, who won the special election on September 23, has not yet been formally awarded the certificate. Republicans have a 53-47 majority in the Senate. But here to pass a law one often has to cross the ‘filibuster’ limit of 60 votes. With the filibuster, at least 41 senators can block a bill indefinitely. To get 60 votes, Republicans need the support of at least seven Democratic senators. The filibuster is not part of the US Constitution and can be abolished by the majority party. But some Republicans are worried that if Democrats come to power in the future, they could abuse it.
What do surveys say about Trump’s military deployment?
Trump has deployed National Guard troops to Chicago, Illinois, and attempted to do so in Portland, Oregon, despite the governors of these states being against it. The National Guard is commonly used during environmental disasters and demonstrations. In an Ipsos poll conducted for Reuters, 58-25 percent people believed that the President should deploy troops only in areas facing external threats. At the same time, 48-37 percent people said that if the Governor of any state protests, then the President should not send troops to that state.
