US President Donald Trump said on Friday he was ending “all trade negotiations” with Canada because of a “deceptive” advertising campaign against US tariffs.
Trump was referring to a television ad aired by the Ontario provincial government that featured former President Ronald Reagan’s warnings about the long-term risks of tariffs.
“The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is fake, in which Ronald Reagan is talking negatively about tariffs,” Trump said. Posted on Truth Social,
He then added, “The tariffs are so critical to America’s national security and economy that, based on their egregious behavior, all trade negotiations with Canada are terminated.”
Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who has played a key role in trade talks with the US, announced the ad campaign earlier this month.
