Why did America cancel Trump-Putin meeting in Budapest?

The United States canceled a planned summit between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest after Moscow sent Washington a memorandum restating hardline demands on Ukraine, UK media reports.

The cancellation followed a tense phone call between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio financial Times The report cited people familiar with the matter. After this, Rubio told Trump that Russia is not showing any desire for talks. “Trump was not impressed with his position,” one source said.

Earlier this month, Trump and Putin agreed by phone to meet in the Hungarian capital to discuss ending Russia’s war in Ukraine. A few days later, Russia’s Foreign Ministry sent a memorandum outlining Putin’s demands to address the “root causes” of his three-and-a-half-year invasion, three people familiar with the matter said.

It outlined conditions that included Ukrainian territorial concessions, a drastic reduction of its armed forces, and a guarantee that it would never join NATO.

Despite describing his October 16 call with Putin as “very meaningful”, Trump reportedly became irritated when the Russian leader claimed victories in the battlefields near Kupynsk and the Oskil River.

After the summit was canceled, Trump imposed new sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil producers and criticized Putin for testing nuclear weapons instead of peace.
