A fire at a discount store in northwestern Mexico has killed at least 23 people and injured 11 others, the state’s governor said Sunday.
On Saturday, a fire broke out at an outlet of Waldo, Mexico’s chain of dollar-format stores, in Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora state.
“The explosion at the Waldo’s store in the center of Hermosillo has left a deep sadness in all Sonorans,” Governor Alfonso Durazo said during a video briefing Published on social media.
“At the moment, 23 people have been killed and 11 are injured who are being treated in various hospitals in the city. Unfortunately, children are among the victims,” Durazo said.
The Governor said that he has ordered “A comprehensive and transparent investigation to clarify the cause of the fire, and determine who is responsible.” “We will do this with seriousness, truth and justice,” Durazo said.
Most of the deaths appear to be linked to exposure to poisonous gas
State Attorney General Gustavo Salas, citing his forensic medical service, said it appeared most of the deaths were caused by toxic gases.
