Belgian Defense Minister Theo Franken said on Sunday that a jammer was unsuccessfully used during drone sightings overnight at Belgium’s Klein Brogel airbase, which is used by NATO forces.
“Last night, we received 3 reports of drones of a larger type and flying at higher altitudes over Klein Brogel,” Franken wrote on Twitter.
“A helicopter and police vehicles chased the drone, but it was lost after several kilometres,” he said.
NATO countries on alert
Drones have been seen at the base earlier also.
Franken said Saturday that he would meet with police next week to assess the threat and take necessary steps to find and arrest the drone pilots.
A spokesman for Franken’s office told Reuters news agency that police were investigating the incident. Government ministers will discuss the scenes this week.
NATO countries have been on high alert in recent weeks after drones were spotted near airports in Copenhagen, Berlin, Munich and throughout the Baltic region.
Additionally, about 20 Russian drones entered Polish airspace in September.
Belgian news agency Belga quoted police sources as saying that a drone was also seen over Antwerp airport on Saturday.
