Taliban presence in Germany puts Afghans at risk – aid project chief

Afghans living in Germany are concerned that representatives of the Taliban regime are now working in diplomatic posts in the country, the head of a project supporting Afghanistan’s single mothers and their children has said.

Zohra Sori-Nourzad told public broadcaster WDR that the presence of representatives of the radical Islamic group at diplomatic missions, including the Afghan Consulate General in Bonn, was a “huge risk and danger” to Afghans, some of whom have fled the Taliban’s repressive measures, especially against women.

He said Afghans may find it more difficult to apply for passports or pursue their asylum proceedings.

According to Sori-Noorzad, who runs the aid project “Sewing for Life,” It is also dangerous if Taliban members gain access to sensitive data, as it could be used against people coming from Afghanistan.

He said Afghans currently living in Germany are “too scared” to contact the consulate.

Sori-Nourzad also said that it could not be ruled out that the Taliban regime would use the consulate for secret service activities.

The German Foreign Ministry told the EPD news agency that although Afghan diplomatic missions in Germany were led by people sent by the country before the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, the government had given permission by Kabul to send two new staff, one to Bonn and one to Berlin.

It added that the German government “has an interest in ensuring that Afghan missions in Germany remain operational and that Afghan nationals in Germany receive adequate consular care.”

This also includes issuing travel documents.

The Taliban regime in Afghanistan is officially unrecognized by almost all countries around the world, including Germany, with Russia being the only nation to have restored formal diplomatic relations so far.

However, Germany has held talks “at a technical level” with the Taliban on issues such as deporting Afghans who have committed crimes.
