A double-decker bus crashed at a bus stop in Sweden’s capital Stockholm on Friday.
In a statement, police confirmed that “several people” were killed, and that there were “both injured and dead” as a result.
Police said they were investigating the incident as a homicide, but added that “the reason for what happened is still unknown.”
“Police are not commenting at this time on the number, gender or age of the victims,” the statement said.
Police spokeswoman Nadya Norton told AFP news agency that the driver of the bus had been arrested.
“We need to interrogate him, then we’ll see if he’ll be released or detained,” Norton said.
What do we know about the bus accident in Stockholm?
Police said officers were working with rescue and ambulance services at the scene.
“Many people are seriously injured. We are supporting ambulance personnel at the scene,” said Oscar Davila of the rescue service, according to Swedish public broadcaster SVT.
According to Reuters, a spokesman for Stockholm’s rescue services said there were six casualties, without giving the number of dead or injured.
The spokesperson also said that there were no passengers on the bus when it met with the accident.
The incident occurred at 3 p.m. local time (1400 GMT) on Valhallavagen Street near the University of Technology.
A spokesperson for the company Transdev confirmed that the bus belonged to them.
“This is one of our buses that was involved and it’s a double decker,” Lovisa Abom said. “I also know there have been injuries but I have no idea yet how it happened.”
Mathias Haglund of the rescue service said that the bus “should not have been in service and was carrying only the driver.”
