A suspect in the deadly car bombing in the Indian capital New Delhi appeared in court on Monday accused of conspiring with a suicide bomber to carry out the attack.
The Indian government classified last week’s incident, which left at least 10 people dead near the historic site of the Red Fort, as a terrorist attack.
India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) produced the suspect in court on Monday and named him as Amir Rashid A.
A statement from the counter-terrorism agency said he had “travelled from Kashmir to Delhi to facilitate the procurement of a car, which was ultimately used as a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (IED) to trigger the blast.”
Another suspect detained
Investigators said late on Monday night that they have arrested another suspect for allegedly providing “technical support to carry out terrorist attacks by modifying drones and attempting to build rockets” before the attack on the Red Fort.
He was identified as Jasir Bilal W.
Authorities have not disclosed details about the motives of the attack or the organizational support of the alleged attackers.
According to the NIA, both the suspects, as well as the alleged suicide bomber, have been identified as Omar Un N, who originally hailed from Indian-administered Kashmir.
Earlier this year the region was rocked by an attack in which 26 mainly Hindu civilians lost their lives at the tourist resort of Pahalgam.
The blast near Delhi’s historic Red Fort is the first incident of mass violence in the heavily guarded city since 2011.
