“We are going towards an on-chain city”

The Head of Government of the City of Buenos Aires, Jorge Macri, was present on Tuesday at Devconnect, the event organized by the Ethereum Foundation that has its 2025 edition this week in the Argentine capital.

Jorge Macri shared the meeting with the Russian-Canadian computer developer, Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum. AND ratified the decision to continue supporting the sustained development of the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

The official held that the City of Buenos Aires is one of the safest in the region and one of the most chosen by digital nomads and students. β€œAnd now we are going towards an on-chain City, where technology is at the service of transparency and growth,” he stated.

Although Jorge Macri did not specify details of what it would mean to be an on-chain city, nor the plans to achieve it, with his statements he showed his collaborative commitment to the industry.

He highlighted that in Argentina there are more than 10 million cryptoactive users: almost a quarter of all Latin American volume. Many of them already operate in crypto in the City and even pay their taxes or a coffee with cryptocurrencies,” he commented.

“We couldn’t look at that process from the outside,” said Jorge Macri.

“From the Government we understood that we could not look at this process from the outside. That is how we opened a working table with the main protagonists: the Ethereum Foundation, the Bitcoin NGO, the main local wallets and exchanges, and global players such as Binance and Bitso,” he stressed.

Thanks to this joint learning, he recalled that they launched BA Cripto, a program that promotes the development of the cryptocurrency ecosystem in the City of Buenos Aires. This includes enabling tax payments, such as ABL and patents, through these assets.

The arrival of Devconnect to Buenos Aires is in line with the strategic vision promoted by Jorge Macri within the framework of the BA Cripto program, which aims to transform the City into a hub of financial and technological innovation at the regional level.
