Kenyan woman clung to a tree for 72 hours, broke her own record – DW – 12/11/2025

Kenyan climate activist Truphena Muthoni has broken her own record by hugging a tree for 72 hours continuously.

“This peaceful protest is important because it sets aside all differences. During other protests, we hear stories of hooligans, but this set aside all stories and promotes humanity,” local media quoted him as saying.

Muthoni’s previous record was 48 hours.

For this challenge, they selected an indigenous tree in the government complex in Nyeri city.

At one point, she almost fell asleep, but was awakened by her supporters, some of whom advocated for Guinness World Records to pay her fees to the official observers.

She said she wanted to raise awareness about the threat posed by climate change and deforestation.

Muthoni also spoke to local media about the significance of the outfit she wore for the challenge: “Black stands for African strength, protest and resilience, green stands for reforestation, regeneration and hope, while red stands for indigenous resistance and frontline courage, and blue stands for water protectors and ocean protectors.”

Scientists have long warned that African countries have the lowest levels of carbon emissions but will suffer some of the worst consequences of climate change.
