A lone gunman linked to the so-called “Islamic State” killed two US service members and a civilian in central Syria, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Saturday.
In a post on Twitter, CENTCOM said three other service members were also injured in the ambush. “The gunman was attacked and killed,” Centcom said.
It is the first fatal incident of firing against US forces in Syria since rebels ousted President Bashar Assad from power last year. Since then, the new administration led by Ahmed Shara has sought to build closer ties with the US.
