US police confirmed Saturday that “multiple” people were shot after reports of an active shooting situation on the campus of Brown University in Providence.
“Multiple shots were fired in the area of Brown University. This is an active investigation. Please shelter in place or avoid the area until further notice,” Providence Police wrote on Twitter.
There were no immediate details about the condition of the victims or the circumstances of the shooting.
In a post on his Truth social platform, US President Donald Trump said that “the FBI is on scene” and “the suspect is in custody,” later reversing his statement.
At first, officials said a suspect was in custody, but the school’s emergency alert system later said, “There are no suspects in police custody and the search for suspects continues.”

The shooting was taking place near the Baras & Holley Building, which houses the School of Engineering and Physics departments.
“Lock doors, turn off phones and remain hidden until further notice,” the school said.
The Ivy League school has approximately 11,000 students.
