At least 10 people were killed when gunmen opened fire in a township near Johannesburg, South Africa, on Sunday, police officials said.
“Some victims were shot at random on the streets by unknown gunmen,” a police statement said. Officials told French news agency AFP that the motive for the shooting was still unknown.
What do we know so far?
The shooting took place near a local bar in Bekkersdal, a poor area close to some of South Africa’s major gold mines. It is approximately 40 kilometers (25 mi) south-west of Johannesburg.
“Ten people have been killed. We don’t have details of who they are,” Gauteng provincial police spokeswoman Brigadier Brenda Muridilli told AFP.
At least 10 others were injured and taken to hospital.
