Jack Dorsey gives away $1 million in BTC with his “Bitcoin Faucet,” but there are conditions

This Monday, April 6, the company Block Inc. activated an advertising campaign called Bitcoin Day under the argument of functioning as a bitcoin faucet. The initiative will be financed by Block’s treasury, allocating between 15 to 50 BTC to be distributed. Currently, the company holds a total of 8,883 BTC.

The announcement was published by Jack Dorsey, CEO of Block Inc., who surprised on April 3 with a brief message on X in which he suggested the return of the bitcoin faucet, an idea that was born in the early years of the digital asset. Initially the message was not accompanied by any extra information, such as how much bitcoin would be distributed, restrictions for users or whether modern solutions, such as payments through the Lightning Network, will be implemented.

Although the ad achieved more than 6 million views and hundreds of comments, on Monday morning, users were able to verify that It was more of a marketing campaign than a true faucet.

Real bitcoin faucets or marketing campaign?

The faucets, In essence, they are mechanisms that deliver fractions of bitcoin in exchange for performing simple actions, such as completing tasks or interacting with content. Its original purpose was to allow users try cryptocurrency without having to invest any amount of money. This concept has roots in 2010, when Gavin Andresen launched the first faucet, awarding 5 BTC per user at a time when the currency was virtually worthless.

Once the platform was published, Block Inc. announced that for the first time, its companies Cash App, Square and Bitkey were joining together in what they called BitcoinDay. The activity would continue until April 10, so that those who participate can spend the gifted assets on products from the same company.

According to the statementpeople can buy bitcoin on Cash App to unlock rewards, spend it at Square merchants that accept Lightning payments to earn more money, or complement a capchat to earn between $25 and $50, but the only way to get them is by purchasing the Bitkey wallet.

It is important to note that this dynamic will not be available for users in Latin America, since it is only available for people residing in the United States and the United Kingdom.

The bitcoin faucet is characterized precisely by eliminating any entry barrier: It does not require prior purchases, nor the mandatory adoption of specific products, but rather distributes small amounts of bitcoin openly to encourage learning and initial adoption. Under this logic, what is proposed in “Bitcoin Day” moves away from that original model, since it conditions the rewards to the use of services from the Block Inc. ecosystem, becoming a commercial activation strategy.
