20 people feared trapped due to building collapse

At least 20 people are feared trapped after a building under construction collapsed on Sunday near the Philippine capital Manila, officials said.

The nine-story building in the city of Angeles collapsed at about 3:00 a.m. local time (1900 GMT Saturday) after a strong typhoon.

There were no immediate reports of any casualties.

About 26 people have been rescued, including two who were staying in an adjacent hotel, which was damaged.

The men were in “stable condition,” city information officer Jay Pelayo said.

It is believed that many of those still unaccounted for are laborers working at the construction site.

Officials said rescuers were “hearing voices” in the debris.

“There are big pieces of concrete and we need equipment to lift them. That’s what’s challenging right now about the rescue,” Pelayo said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the collapse.
