What the court documents say
“The FBI recovered more than 150 improvised explosive devices from the defendant’s property, which is tentatively believed to be the largest seizure by number of ready explosive devices in FBI history,” prosecutors said in detention affidavits for FBI bomb technicians. He examined the devices and found that they were pipe bombs, some of them arranged by color. Some appear to have been hand-marked “lethal” into wearable vests.
The accused was shooting pictures of Biden
The investigation into Spafford began in 2023, when a neighbor told authorities he had explosives and was already missing three of his fingers. The neighbor also said that the detainees used pictures of US President Joe Biden to shoot at the shooting range. “His release poses a significant threat to his roommates, the general community, as well as to pretrial officers who must periodically investigate his home, which contains potentially dangerous and unstable explosives,” the documents said.
Spafford’s attorneys appealed his release before the hearing, citing his personal qualities as a “hardworking family man with no criminal record.”
