People in the country woke up this Monday morning wondering how Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for adopting austerity measures in view of the global economic uncertainties created by the Iran war might affect their daily lives.

Modi has urged citizens to cut fuel use, revive work-from-home arrangements and avoid unnecessary foreign travel to conserve foreign exchange reserves, among other proposed “nationally responsible” lifestyle changes.

Meanwhile, it’s a first Monday for new Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, who took oath of office on Sunday, ending the political suspense over whether he will be able to muster the majority required to form a government in the south Indian state.

The actor-turned-politician has rewritten the script of Tamil Nadu politics, in which Dravidian parties enjoyed a monopoly on power for nearly 60 years.
