French prosecutors on Wednesday announced a probe against former prime minister Édouard Philippe, a centrist seen as one of the leading contenders to replace President Emmanuel Macron in next year’s presidential race, over alleged embezzlement of public funds. Polls suggest Philippe could win against the far-right National Rally party candidate, also considered a strong contender for the presidency.
