Snow and ice have affected flight operations at Germany’s three major airports, with some flights forced to be cancelled.
“Due to the predicted weather conditions, flight operations are expected to be restricted and flights canceled on Sunday, January 5, especially in the morning,” Munich Airport said on its website.
Frankfurt Airport warned of similar disruption and cancellations in the morning and advised passengers to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport.
Various flights had to be canceled in Frankfurt, including flights to famous European destinations such as Paris, Venice and Prague.
Stuttgart Airport in south-western Germany also reported several delays due to winter weather, although the runway had been cleared and was ready for operations. Some aircraft have to be de-iced before takeoff, delaying departure times.
Visibility reduced at airports
German news agency dpa quoted a Munich airport spokesperson as saying that low visibility caused by snowfall had led to long intervals between take-offs and landings, while planes also needed to be de-iced.
The spokesperson said one runway was being kept open while the other was being cleared.
The German weather service issued a warning of severe weather conditions, particularly in Bavaria, where freezing rain and black ice were expected.
Meanwhile, German rail operator Deutsche Bahn (DB) also warned that weather conditions were affecting some of its operations.
