PM Modi urges caution and kindness as heat wave hits India
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged people to take precautions and remain vigilant against heat-related illnesses amid “rising temperatures”.
“This heat is harsh on all of us and I urge you all to be as careful as possible. Please stay hydrated, carry water with you when going out. Give a glass of water to others,” he said in the first of a series of posts, adding, “Kindness goes a long way.”
In another post on X, he warned Indians to beware of heatstroke symptoms.
“Keep an eye out for symptoms of heat exhaustion like dizziness, nausea or extreme fatigue. If anyone around you feels unusually unwell, weak or has a headache, it is best to immediately help them move to a cool and shady place. Make sure they have water, ORS, etc., which will help them,” Modi said.
He reminded the country that children, the elderly and people working outside were especially vulnerable to extreme heat.
Modi’s social media posts come at least a week after large parts of India faced a persistent heat wave. While this is common in Indian summers, weather experts had previously warned that 2026 is likely to see a strong El Nino event, which will only make matters worse.
Indian media is reporting cases of water shortage in many cities and villages. Meanwhile, at least 16 people have died in the southern state of Telangana as hundreds of heat stroke cases are reported across the country.
Maximum temperatures in many areas have been around 47 degrees Celsius (116 degrees Fahrenheit), making conditions extreme for gig workers, construction laborers and service providers dependent on daily wages.
The Indian Prime Minister also reminded citizens to leave water for birds and animals.
He said, “Let us also remember the birds and animals around us. A small bowl of water placed outside your home, balconies, terraces, shops or offices can become a lifeline for a thirsty bird. May compassion guide us in these difficult days.”
according to Air quality and weather tracking website AQI.INThe top 70 of the world’s hottest cities on Wednesday afternoon were all in India.
