The Romanian Defense Ministry said in a statement on Friday that a Russian drone entered Romanian airspace and crashed on the roof of a block of flats in the southeastern city of Galați, close to the border with Ukraine.
“During the night of May 28–29, the Russian Federation resumed drone attacks on civilian and infrastructure targets in Ukraine near the river border with Romania,” the ministry said.
“One of these drones entered Romanian airspace, was tracked by radar to the southern part of the city of Galați, and crashed on the roof of an apartment building, causing a fire upon impact,” the ministry statement said.
Two people suffered minor injuries
Meanwhile, the Romanian General Inspectorate for Emergencies announced on Facebook that a drone struck a 10th-floor apartment, causing a fire and slightly injuring two people.
It said the drone’s entire explosive payload detonated, causing the evacuation of about 70 people. The fire was eventually brought under control.
Russia has repeatedly attacked the Ukrainian port of Reni on the Danube near Galati. Debris of Russian drones has been recovered several times in the border area of Romania.
Exactly a month ago, a Russian drone crashed in Galați, striking a residential house building, according to officials. No one was injured.
Another drone found in northern Romania
In a separate incident, a drone without an explosive charge was found near Baia Mare in northwestern Romania. The area has been secured, TVR reported late Thursday night, quoting local officials.
Officials are investigating the origin of the drone and how it reached the area. According to the report, the drone’s wingspan was about 3 meters (9.8 feet).
Russian drone attacks Izmail, Ukraine
Meanwhile, local authorities in Ukraine’s southern Odessa region announced on Telegram that drones had attacked the Izmail port area overnight.
According to the post, a drone got entangled in power lines, causing temporary power cut to five villages.
Izmail, which is close to the Romanian border, is home to the largest Ukrainian port on the Danube River and is frequently targeted by Russia because of its strategic location.
