A meteor hurtling through Earth’s atmosphere exploded over the northeastern United States, shaking buildings in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, according to reports Saturday.
US space agency NASA wrote in a statement posted on Twitter that the incident released energy equivalent to about 300 tons of TNT, which is responsible for the loud noise.

NASA’s deputy news chief Jennifer Duran told news agency AFP that the fireball split across northeastern Massachusetts and southeastern New Hampshire at 2:06 p.m. (6:06 p.m. UTC).
They said the meteor was traveling at 75,000 miles per hour (more than 120,000 kilometers per hour) when it broke up at an altitude of 40 miles (64 kilometers) over the area.
“This fireball was not associated with any currently active meteor shower, but was a natural object and not space debris or re-entry of a satellite,” Doran said in his statement.
Loud noise alerts people
The residents of the area were stunned by the loud echoing sound.
Some people reported on social media that their houses were shaken by the noise.
In some videos circulating online, two loud bangs can be heard, with no apparent cause of fire, smoke or noise.
