Welcome to our coverage

Good morning and welcome to DW’s coverage of the Iran war with some promising news.

Both the US and Iran have said that a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for peace may be within reach. However, US President Donald Trump’s deadline to sign the agreement has faced opposition.

Today we will see if an agreement is finally reached that could reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Here’s what you need to know on the day:

  • Donald Trump claimed a deal with Iran is “about to be signed” on Sunday.
  • On Saturday afternoon, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that the agreement would be finalized in the next 24 hours.
  • Trump promised that the Strait of Hormuz would be open “to all” immediately after the agreement.
  • Under the deal, Iran will not possess nuclear weapons but will not immediately hand over enriched material as Israel has insisted.
  • Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said a peace deal was close but would not be signed on Sunday.
  • It appears that Israel’s military is trying to make as much profit as possible in the event of a US-Iran deal being reached, which would also likely include Lebanon.

Stay tuned!
