Voters in Switzerland were deciding on Sunday the fate of a proposal to limit the Alpine country’s population to 10 million by 2050.
Initial estimates from national broadcaster SRF indicate that the proposal is rejected by about 55% of the public, while 45% are in favor.
Under Switzerland’s system of direct democracy, referendums are mostly binding in their effect.
The proposal has been put forward by the Swiss People’s Party (SVP), which has the largest number of seats in the Swiss Parliament.
