Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Wednesday condemned several comments made about Mexico by President-elect Donald Trump in a news conference a day earlier.
Trump on Tuesday called for the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed “America’s Gulf.”
In response, Sheinbaum sarcastically suggested on Wednesday that the US be called “Mexican America.”
“It feels good, doesn’t it?” Sheinbaum said, pointing to a 17th-century world map of North America. Before the Mexican–American War from 1846 to 1848, the areas of California, Texas, and Arizona that are now the U.S. states were separate from Mexico.
“They talked about the name, we’re talking about the name,” Sheinbaum said.
