France issues red alert as heatwave breaks records and death toll mounts


France experienced its hottest-ever night Monday into Tuesday as Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said 40 people had drowned across the country since June 18 as they sought to escape the record heat. In a country without widespread air-conditioning, the scorching temperatures have led to school closures, canceled events and disrupted rail services.
