The record set on Friday for the highest June temperature in Germany could potentially fall a day later, with the mercury rising to 42 degrees Celsius (107.6 F) in some places on Saturday, the German Weather Service (DWD) said.

According to preliminary data, the temperature in the western city of Saarbrucken was recorded at 41.3 degrees Celsius on Friday.

For Saturday, the DWD has predicted temperatures between 36 and 41 C, and on Sunday, eastern and southeastern regions may see maximum temperatures between 39 and 41 C.

According to forecasters, temperatures could even reach 42 degrees Celsius in the eastern Lausitz region on Sunday.

The rest of Germany is expected to experience mild temperatures ranging from 32 to 38 degrees Celsius.

However, the DWD says there is a possibility of storms with strong winds and possibly even hail over the weekend, especially in central and northern Germany.

The heat wave is predicted to move eastwards early next week, bringing temperatures across Western Europe in line with normal summer levels.

According to the European Union’s Copernicus climate change service, the hot weather is being caused by a “heat dome” of trapped air off North Africa.

However, climate scientists say the heat wave has become much more extreme due to human-induced global warming.
