From Hungary to Ukraine, Europe’s scorching heatwave hits east


While France, Italy, the UK and the rest of western Europe reeled under a heatwave last week, central and eastern Europe sweltered too. The Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and the Balkans hit record temperatures. Ukraine imposed power outages as its grid buckled under demand. Romania got slammed by a violent storm after its own heatwave. This summer’s deadly heat arrived early and broke records—already testing our societies’ limits.
