Indian government declared 23 people from Pakistan as ‘terrorists’
The Indian government has designated 23 Pakistan-based individuals as “terrorists” under its anti-terrorism law, known as the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency said.
According to the order issued by the Home Ministry, these individuals are linked to terrorist groups including Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
The government amended the UAPA in August 2019 to include a provision that allows a person to be designated as a “terrorist”.
Before this amendment, only organizations could be designated as terrorist organizations.
Inclusion of terrorists’ names in the list will allow the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to block their finances, ban arms sales and seize their assets.
According to an Indian newspaper report, with the latest 23 names, the list now has 80 individuals designated as terrorists. Hindustan Times.
The new additions to the list reportedly include three close associates of Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed, accused of involvement in the 2008 Mumbai attacks that killed more than 160 people and injured hundreds of others.
