Remains of Indian tourists killed in Vietnam will reach Mumbai
The Indian Embassy in Vietnam said the remains of 15 Indian tourists killed in Vietnam will be brought to India on Monday night.
A social media post said the flight will depart Ho Chi Minh City at 6:00 pm local time and reach Mumbai at 9:35 pm IST via a Vietnam Airlines flight.
“The concerned state governments have been informed and requested to coordinate with the affected families for onward travel of the mortal remains to their final destination,” the post said.
The incident occurred on Saturday when the boat carrying 32 Indian tourists, three Vietnamese crew members and a tour guide capsized in rough seas off Mae Rut Ngoi, an island near Phu Quoc.
Vietnamese media said on Sunday that the remaining 21 rescued people had been discharged from hospital and were returning to India.
Meanwhile, the 57-year-old captain of the boat has been arrested for “violation of laws” which resulted in the boat capsizing.
Vietnamese media outlet Tuoi Tre reported that “Vietnamese authorities’ initial assessment suggests it was an unavoidable incident caused by extreme weather conditions” which changed rapidly. However, state media quoted a witness as saying he saw the boat capsize, with several people clinging to the hull, while others were swept out to sea without life jackets.
In India, survivors of the incidents who had returned to their countries expressed displeasure over delays in medical care, according to news agency Press Trust of India.
