Sonam Wangchuk’s wife accuses authorities of shifting her without informing family
Gitanjali Angmo, wife of activist Sonam Wangchuk, on Saturday accused the authorities of removing the hunger striker from the Jantar Mantar protest site in New Delhi and shifting him to a hospital without informing her or her family.
Wangchuk was taken to Safdarjung Hospital on the 21st day of his hunger strike, with police saying the move was in accordance with Delhi High Court orders and based on expert medical advice due to his deteriorating health.
Angmo questioned the authorities’ explanation, saying doctors at Safdarjung Hospital examined Wangchuk at the protest site on Friday evening and found his vital signs normal.
“They are now telling us that his potassium has gone down and it is life-threatening. But when we asked to see the report, they are not giving it to us,” he told reporters outside the hospital.
He said the planned protest march to Parliament on Monday would continue even if Wangchuk is unable to attend.
Angmo said, “Even if Sonam cannot attend the march, I will still represent her and lead that march, and it will take place as planned on Monday.”

Delhi Police’s action inconsistent with court order
Delhi Police on Saturday said that Sonam Wangchuk has been shifted from her protest site to the hospital on court orders and on medical grounds.
“As per the orders of the Honorable High Court and on expert medical advice due to the deteriorating health condition of Shri Sonam Wangchuk, he has been shifted to the hospital for necessary medical care,” Delhi Police posted on Twitter.
While the CJP said Wangchuk’s health was deteriorating, the police statement Seen different from the order of Delhi High Court on Thursday, which directed officials to monitor his health daily amid concerns about his condition.
Additionally, the police also alleged that protesters at the site “tried to create a disturbance, resulting in a minor ruckus,” while adding that officers “exercised maximum restraint and practiced safely.”
Police asked the protesters camping at New Delhi’s historic Jantar Mantar to vacate the ground.
Incidentally, Delhi Police – which falls under the purview of Union Home Minister Amit Shah – got a new chief on Friday: Anurag Kumar.
