At least three people were killed and others injured in a drone strike by Russia in a rare attack on Ukraine’s capital Kiev, city officials said Saturday.
“We already have four killed in the Shevchenkivskyi district,” Timur Tkachenko, the head of Kiev’s military administration, said in a Telegram post.
What do we know about the attack?
Tkachenko said the deaths were caused by a downed missile that fell over Kiev’s Shevchenkivskyi district. He said that three others were also injured in the attack.
“The Russian military first launched a drone and then launched a ballistic-missile attack,” parliamentary ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets wrote on social media. “These actions only underline the cruelty and barbarity of the enemy.”
Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said an underground station and water pipes were damaged by the attacks.
Russian forces also attacked the southeastern city of Zaporizhia, the city’s regional governor said, adding that ten people were wounded in the attack and offices at an industrial facility were damaged.
The overnight Russian strikes across Ukraine included 39 drones and four ballistic missiles, according to the Ukrainian Air Force, which said it shot down 24 drones and two missiles.
The rare attack on the center of Kiev comes as Ukraine has stepped up its attacks on Russian energy and military facilities in recent months.
