Another silent night as US reports no attacks against Iran
No US strikes were reported on Iran on Saturday and Sunday after 13 nights of continuous bombing by the US military.
There were also no reports of attacks by Iran on its Gulf neighbors.
The silence is reviving hopes of both sides returning to the negotiating table as the war between them reached the five-month mark on July 28.
The US military did not announce any new strikes on Sunday, but said “the naval blockade against Iran remains in full effect.”
It was not immediately known why the US was firing on Iran.
US President Donald Trump told US news outlet Axios on Thursday that he was considering a “massive attack” on Iran, which he described as “bigger than ever before”.
But he also says that talks with Iran are progressing.
“We’re talking to them right now. I think they’re becoming more serious,” Trump told reporters Friday. He said Tehran faced a choice between a deal and an attack at a “very high level”.
“The US president has always been clear that his priority is diplomacy, but he has shown Iran what will happen if they fail to come to the negotiating table in a serious manner,” a senior Trump administration official told Reuters.
Stock pressure?
The decline in attacks comes even as US media have expressed concern about running out of weapons in the escalating conflict.
Vice President JD Vance and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Kaine both raised concerns about the US defense stockpile with Trump during a White House meeting on Friday, CNN quoted a US official as saying.
The official told CNN that Washington’s campaign against Tehran “has stalled.”
While the US and Iran are withdrawing, retaliatory attacks between Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels and Saudi Arabia have opened a new front in the Middle East war.
