Bookings for tourist accommodation through major online platforms have reached record highs in Germany.
This figure rose sharply above both last year’s levels and those seen before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Why are tourist rental bookings increasing in Germany?
Travelers booked 68.3 million night stays through Airbnb, Booking.com and Expedia in 2025, the Federal Statistics Office said Tuesday, citing data from European statistics agency Eurostat.
This was an increase of 13% compared to 2024 and 83% more than the level recorded in 2019.
This increase occurred despite TripAdvisor not being included in the data after leaving the short-term accommodation booking market.
Strong domestic demand was the main driver of growth. German travelers booked 48.5 million overnight stays, an increase of more than 15% compared to the previous year.
The number of domestic bookings has more than doubled since 2019.
Foreign visitors made 19.8 million bookings for overnight stays, an increase of almost 8% compared to 2024.
Who is visiting Germany’s tourist destinations?
The Netherlands had the highest number of travelers in international bookings, with 2.9 million overnight stays, followed by Poland at 2.1 million and the US at 1.3 million.
The figures reflect a largely small and privately run housing market.
Nearly 94% of nights booked were spent at properties with fewer than 10 beds, which are not included in Germany’s official monthly tourism statistics.
The platform data therefore provides a comprehensive picture of the country’s short-term accommodation market.
Bavaria recorded the highest number of overnight stays, with 10.6 million. Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia are in second place with 8.1 million each.
There was considerable variation in travel patterns between the states of Germany.
About 90% of guests in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein came from within Germany, while the city-states and western regions attracted a larger share of international visitors.
Foreign guest bookings in Berlin accounted for more than two-thirds, 67.7%.
Their share was also above average in North Rhine-Westphalia at 42.3% and in Baden-Württemberg at 40.8%.
