GfK: Consumer climate must accept losses

According to the Society for Consumer Research (GfK) and the Nuremberg Institute for Market Cutings (NIM), the consumption mood in Germany remains negative. Both the economic and income expectations as well as the inclination tendency developed negatively in the first month of the new year 2025. On the other hand, the pensions were able to achieve slight gains. As a result, the consumer climate decreases in the forecast. For February 2025, another decline will be forecast in the previous month. The climate index will be estimated at -22.4 points in the month, after revised -21.4 points in January.

“The consumer climate suffers a setback again and starts cloudy into the new year,” says Rolf Bürkl, consumer expert at NIM. The quiet hopes for a cautious recovery that came up after the increase in the previous month were immediately re -nuisled. At best, a stagnant development has been recognized since the middle of last year, while in the first half of 2024 the signs were still on relaxation. Sustainable recovery of the consumer climate is currently not in sight, especially since the inflation rate has recently attracted a bit. ”
