Overall, German retail developed positively in August 2024: results were 1.6% above the previous month, both in real and nominal terms. This emerges from current results from the Federal Statistical Office. Compared to the same month last year, sales even increased by 2.1% (real) or 3.1% (nominal). In the previous months, sales development in German retail was largely negative: after a decline in May and June, it was not until July 2024 that there was an increase again compared to the previous month (1.5% real, 1.7% nominal).
In the non-food retail sector, the growth of 1.1% was mainly due to internet and mail order sales: Here sales rose by 8.9% compared to the previous month and 10.8% in August 2023 compared to the same month last year The textiles, clothing, shoes and leather goods sector, however, performed negatively over the month: adjusted for prices, there was a decline of 6.0%, nominally -4.3%.
