Officials said many people have been killed in an attack in a high school in Southern Austria Graz.
Police said “several deaths” occurred after an operation began after the report of the gunshot at Dreerschützengasse Street. The operation started at 10 am in local time (0800 UTC).
The police said in a subsequent statement that the school was successfully evacuated.
“The situation is safe,” the police said. “There is no hope of any threat ahead.”
Police said that a helicopter had deployed bees as part of the operation.
The Graz has around 300,000 residents and styria is the state capital.
What do we know about the suspect?
Austrian officials prepared the shooter as a 21 -year -old man, who was not known to the police.
He carried out an attack with a long gun and a handgun, which he had legally.
Police said motivations as suspected criminals said it was not clear.
He said that the gunman killed him in a toilet in the school after shooting.
Internal Minister Gerhard Karner said that the shooter was an alumnus at the High School who did not graduate.
He confirmed that ten people were killed in the attack, including suspected criminals.
Out of the victims, six were women and three paints, they said.
The minister said that 12 people were injured in the shooting, some of them maintained serious injuries.
Orf Public Broadcaster quoted the police, saying that both the students and teachers were among the casualties.
Police said they believe the shooter had worked alone.
Austria announced 3 days mourning
Austrian Chancellor Christian stocker announced three days of national mourning after shooting, which he described as “dark days in the history of our country”.
The flag is to be flew in half-masters with a national minute of mourning for 10 am on Wednesday.
Earlier on Tuesday, he expressed his condolences to the victims and their loved ones in a post on X.
The school shooting in the Graz is “a national tragedy that has shocked our entire country,” the stocker said.
“There are no words for Petin and sorrow that we are all … feeling.”
President Alexander Van Der Bellen said the attack had hit Austria “right”.
“Austria is in mourning,” said. “And in this hour, we stand together.”
Meanwhile, the neighboring German Chancellor, Frederick Merz said that Germans were mourning with Austria.
“Dreadful news from Graz. Our thoughts are with our Austrian friends and we mourn with Them,” Heer said.
European Commission Chairman Ursula von Der Leyen expressed his condolences in an X post.
“My views are with the victims, their families and friends,” she said. “Schools are a symbol for youth, hope and future. It is difficult to bear schools, schools become places of death and violence.”
European Union’s top diplomat Kaza Kalas said he is “surprised by the news of school shooting in Austria.”
“Every child should feel safe in school and be able to learn free from fear and violence.”
How many strict Austria gun laws are?
According to the Small Arms Survey Research Project, there are about 30 civilians in Austria through 100 people.
Alpine country has banned automated weapons and pump action guns, while revolvers, pistols and semi-automated weapons are allowed with permits.

In 2020, four were killed and 22 injured in one shooting at the center of Vienna.
