Just good neighbors? What do nations helping Syria really want – DW – 06/11/2025

With the strings attached – that is how to have almost all recent foreign aids and assistance in Syria. After the rebel aggressive of December 2024, which fell into the dictatorship of the country’s decades-Lumb Asad family, various neighboring states have stepped into helping Syria to recover from the 14-year cruel civil war.

There are many things of humanitarian aid, Arab unity, international development and regional security. But like any more diplomatic region, most of the countries involved are acting in their own interests. So, what are they doing in Syria and why?

Turkish: the biggest winner

Turkey is often designed as the “biggest winner” after the rebellious group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or an electric aggressive led by HTS.

, [HTS] The group had long cultivated a close -working relationship with Ankara as the rebels controlled a province of Idlib on the Turkish border in the northern Syria, “real Aydintasbas, a senior policy partner and a senior policy partner of Turkish and expert in European Council on foreign relations Recently explained,

HTS has formed an interim government, searching for its own members or close colleagues – searching as defense, foreign affairs and interior. It keeps the Turkish government with the current relationship of HTS in a powerful position.

“Türkiye, first and most important, in the middle and long -term, is interested in stabilization of Syria,” Sinum Ader, a razor of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, Told Washington -based Center for Strategic and International Studies“It does not want a failed state on its border.”

There are currently about 20,000 Turkish soldiers in northern Syria, there are talks of a Turkish-Serin Defense Treaty, as well as plans to install Turkish air and naval bases inside Syria. Earlier this month, Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler told reporters that his country would help the new Syrian army.

In the short term, one of the primary objectives of Türkiye was to combat the Syrian Kurdish forces, which controlled large parts of the North -East of Syria during the war. The Turkish thesis is considered associated with the terrorist Kurdish Workers Party, or PKK. For decades, later a violent, armed struggle against Turkey for Kurdish rights, but announced the end of his rebellion earlier this year.

This is why Turkey has supported the formation of a centralized government in Syria, rather than a federation of semi-lover region run by various Syrian communities including Kurds. For now, Turkey feels that he has found its way: Kurdish Central of Syria has agreed to be part of the interim government led by HTS and says that his soldiers will join the new Syrian army.

Hence there are economic opportunities for Türkiye in Syria. The neighboring country was already providing a lot of consumer goods in the HTS-controlled sector and is a large construction area that will benefit from reconstruction in Syria. In fact, stock prices for Turkish construction sector businesses increased by about 3% after the expulsion of Assad regime.

Gulf State: Money and Power

Various Gulf states have come to Syrian financial and prestigious rescue in the last few months. Saudi Arabia and Qatar paid their $ 15.5 million (€ 13.6 million) loans to the World Bank, Qatar would pay around $ 87 million in salary for Syria’s public Syria and the first major development deals in Syria have been made with United Arab Emirates, Qatari and Turkish companies. Saudi Arabia leaders successfully pushed the restrictions on Syria and, although it was never confirmed, the UAE allegedly helped the stress to define Syria and neighboring Israel.

, [Gulf] The state is vandalizing Syrian’s need for Syrian financial resources, to woo the economic and political alliances with the new leadership in Damascus, “Ilonora Ardamagani, a senior research partner of the Italian Institute for International Political Studies, includes Alonora Ardamagani,,” One June explained in analysis,

,[Gulf] The interest of the states lies in strengthening their political, security and economic relations with Damascus and addressing questions of questions that matter to them, such as Captain Drugs and Counterism smuggling, “Emily Tasinato, ECFR Fellow for the Gulf region,” So recently written.

For Gulf leaders, emphasis has been laid on filling the geo -political power vacuum that arises after the end of the Assad rule. Earlier, Iran and Russia were the largest supporters and bay states of Assad, mostly Sunni Muslim leadership, happy to see Iran, a Shia Muslim theology and a perennial enemy were pushed out. Saudi Arabia is therefore worried about Türkiye’s influence, Armagani suggested.

US: A new alliance?

US President Donald Trump first called American troops to get out of Syria. “This is not our fight,” he wrote on social media last December.

But this attitude has changed after a conversation with Saudi Arabia and Turkish leaders, both Trump preferred personally.

During the Civil War, around 2,000 American soldiers were deployed with Syrian Kurdish, extremist “Islamic State,” or “Is,” in the ongoing battle against the group. Currently a drawdown is running, with 500 already left as Syrian-Kurd fighters.

However, in this month, beer reports that an American military delegation wants to make a deal to make a deal to a deal to Damascus.

In an interview with Syria TV last month, US State Department spokesman Michael Mitchell said that the “IS” was very early to withdraw the US completely due to the ongoing concern about the group. The US was ready to start a “new era” in its relations with Syria, Mitchell said.

Observers have speculated that America can actually play a even bigger role in Syria in the future. This, they argue, combat Russian effects and ability, even produce some children of the Syrian-Israeli Dette.

Iran, Russia: the largest losing

The two countries are often lost most as the most lost regime after excluding the Assad regime. Both were earlier a significant appearance in Syria, and it has reduced considerably. But this does not mean that Ether has gone for good.

Russian diplomatic maintains an appearance in Syria, controversially deployed itself as a “protector” of Syrian minorities and is therefore close economic relations for Syrian colleagues such as Turkey and UAE.

For Iran, “its impact in Syria is no longer accidental on the existence of Assad regime,” wrote by Egyptian security analyst Mohammad Aldoh Expert US outlet, global security reviewThis month. “It is embedded in paramilitary networks, conceptual infrastructure and narco-trafficking cartel.”
