Paul Kapoor (who was born in New Delhi and grew up in the US) recalled his Indian connection before the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee on 10 June, saying, ‘If I confirm then I will try to pursue America-India relations and bring partnership to its full possibilities.’ He also said that there are many shared interests like keeping the Indo-Pacific sector independent and free, sharing technology, energy security and business relations between the US and India. Paul Kapoor said that he would promote peace and anti -terrorism partnership with both India and Pakistan to ensure the stability of South Asia. Regarding Pakistan, he said that he will carry forward security cooperation as per the interests of America and will seek opportunities in business and investment.

Paul Kapoor said that he used to come to India often in childhood and increased his interest in South Asia during PG, after which he has written many books and articles on the region. He has trained American military officers on the strategy of South Asia and has also worked in the policy plan team of the State Department. Paul Kapoor underlined the strategic roles of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Maldives and Bhutan, saying that these countries are important for the stability of Indo-Pacific. Kapoor said, “If confirmed, I will advocate to increase cooperation with these countries, so that China’s influence can be fought and trade opportunities are expanded.” Regarding Afghanistan, Kapoor said that he would support efforts to bring the remaining American prisoners safely and ensure that Afghanistan never became a center of terrorism against America again. Paul Kapoor’s appointment has been proposed at a time when the US-India relations are being strengthened in the areas of defense, technology and trade.
