Heavy rain alert: The heavy rains on Sunday in many parts of Karnataka have completely disturbed the normal life. Large level waterlogging, landslide and rising water levels of rivers have affected many districts of the state. The coastal areas of Karnataka have been badly affected by this intense rainfall. Due to heavy water flow from the neighboring state of Maharashtra, the water level of Krishna river in Yadgir district has increased considerably.
Torrential rains occurred in coastal areas
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), many areas of South Kannada recorded rain between 110 mm to 210 mm within 24 hours. Mangaluru, the district headquarters of South Kannada, received 170 mm of rain, while the Panumbur Olonged Observatory recorded more rain of 210 mm. The neighboring Udupi district also recorded 50 mm of rain.
Mangaluru saw heavy waterlogging due to overflow of storm water drains in areas like Pumpwell, Bekrankatte, Kaikamba and Kankanadi. In the low -lying areas, rain water was flooded on houses, shops and roads, causing traffic jams and damage to the property. At Pumpwell Junction, a major traffic intersection, buses were diverted through Nanathur Circle due to heavy waterlogging.
Jayashree Gate-Bikarnakatte stretch drowned in rain water, which highlighted the lack of adequate drainage infrastructure. The residents claimed that no permanent solution has been found despite repeated complaints in Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC). Municipal officials confirmed that emergency response teams have been deployed to clean the drains and monitor the flood potential areas.
Landslide and floods occurred due to heavy rains
The movement of vehicles has been disrupted from a landslide near Kettishklu on National Highway-169 at Belthangdi taluk. The authorities have not reported any casualties, and the work of clearing the road is going on. In Udupi district, many areas including Brahmavar, Gundibail, Ambagilu, Kollagiri and KG Road were flooded. Heerore, Haladi, Kumbashi, Thecatta and parts of Kundapur Taluk have also been reported to have heavy waterlogging, causing both the service roads along the residential area and the service roads along the National Highway 66.
IMD has released Heavy Rain Alert
IMD has issued orange alert for South Kannada, Udupi, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru and Kodagu, which has predicted lightning with thunderstorms. The authorities have urged the public to stay away from waterlogging and landslide potential areas and inform local disaster response units in emergency.
