Will India need to take one side? – DW – 06/20/2025

India has a cordial relationship with both Israel and Iran, which is the result of a delicate balance act, pulling back over many years.

Now, New Delhi finds itself in an uncertain position because the Israeli-Iran struggle increases a wide conflict with great and increasing uncertainty of mountain death.

India’s diplomatic tight

In the last decade, India has especially formed relations with Israel in defense and technology. India has acquired advanced weapons, including the Barak 8 defense missile, unmanned air vehicle (UAV), ammunition and sophisticated radar systems.

In the last month’s short-term struggle Betty India and Pakistan, New Delhi allegedly used various Israeli-root weapons, underlining the importance of strategic defense partnership.

At the same time, India also gives importance to its historical and cultural relations with Iran as well as its strategic role in regional connectivity, energy security and geopolitical balance. Tehran is the second largest supplier of crude oil in New Delhi.

Importantly, Iran serves as India’s entrance to Afghanistan and Central Asia. The Chabahar port project on the Gulf of Oman, jointly developed by India and Iran, is central for this strategy, which gives India a direct access to the region bypassing Pakistan.

Shanti Mariete D’Souza, a regional expert who monitored the current events, said that “India needs to maintain its balance act to protect security relations with Israel and protect their strategic interests and economic commitment to the Chabahar port.”

“, Strategic ambiguity, strategic ambiguity fulfills the purpose of dragging in India’s struggle, bound to widen war,” said D’Ouza, founder of the Mantaya Institute for Strategic Studies for War.

Protect the interests of New Delhi

Last week, India’s Foreign Ministry released statement Expressing deep concern in recent developments below Iran and Israel.

The statement said, “India has urged to avoid any escalatery step. Existing channels of dialogue and diplomacy should be used to work towards de-size and to solve the underlying issues.”

“India enjoys close and friendly relations with both countries and is ready to expand all possible supports,” he said.

Sticking to its policy of strategic ambiguity and non -religion, India recently removed itself from a Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) statement Condemning Israel’s attacks on Iran.

The SCO is a 10-member block created by China and Russia to combat the global order of Western-Left. India is a SCO member despite its regional rivalry with China. Responding to the growth between Israel and Iran, the SCO expressed “serious concern” and strongly expressed Israel’s military attacks.

PR Kumaraswamy, a professor of Middle Eastern studies specialized in Israeli politics at Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi, told DW that India’s strategic silence on Israel-Iran struggle has been reflected by his decisive refusal for the support of SCO, reflecting a “Calited and Matured Officers, and fulfills a mature attitude.

Kumaraswamy said, “This approach, for its neutrality during the Ukraine-Russia war, recognizes emotions in many Arab capitals because they are in the form of Israeli’s actions and an atom between Iran.”

“Strategic autonomy can be carried forward through calculating and minimal reactions without the declaration of any rhetoric.”

However, D’Suza said that such a policy would be useful as long as the conflict between Israel and Iran is no less.

“If it moves forward, every step in India will be analyzed and evaluated, and its fairness wants to test which will be a test case for India’s diplomacy,” he said.

He said, “This will come under pressure if the conflict will grow for a long time. However, being a voter of diplomacy and dialogue is a prudent policy that will maintain India’s principle of non-comprehension,” he said.

Will India’s hand be forced?

Earlier this week, India launched “Operation Indus” to vacate the Indian national, which began with 110 Indian students from Northern Iran. Thesis students were assisted in crossing Armenia by road under the supervision of Indian diplomats.

After successful withdrawal from Iran, India enhanced the operation to include its national national in Israel. According to India’s Foreign Ministry, Indian citizens who wish to leave Israel are being extracted through land boundaries and then brought to India.

Former diplomat Anil Wadhwa said that there is a direct threat to Delhi’s important interests like energy, connectivity or security to take a clear side in the struggle.

“Strategic autonomy has been preferred by India. In the Middle East, Rai Iranians are divided on nuclear activities. India, therefore, works on a bilateral basis with its Middle East partners, which is to develop the trust and enhance their interests to enhance their interests.”
