The share of children growing up in large families in Germany has re -growing in recent years, according to the federal statistical office (Destatis), the immigration is mainly run by the 2015.
This figure had come down from 25% in 1996 to 23% in 2015, but then again by 2024 to 26%.
“Development in the last ten years is mainly due to the immigration that begins in 2015,” Destatis said.
Families with a migration background were found three or more children, with families without foreign roots about twice. In 2024, 19% of migrant families had at least three children, while about 10% compared to other families.
So in 2024, 8% of children lived with three or more brothers, while 18% had two brothers. The largest group – 44% – lived with a brother -in -law, and 30% were only children.
The large family was slightly more common in western federal states, where 13% of families had at least three children, compared to 11% in East Germany.
The figures come from the annual microcensus, which surveyed 1% of the population. Families are defined as a child of parents living in the same house, who have gone out, they have not been included.
