Russia first country to recognize the Taliban rule – DW – 07/04/2025

The Taliban government of Afghanistan said that Russia became the first nation to recognize its rule on Thursday.

After the announcement, Aaghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mottaki met the Russian ambassador of Afghanistan, Dimitri Zirnov in Kabul on Thursday.

“This brave decision wants to be an example for others … Now when the process of recognition has begun, Russia was ahead of everyone,” Mutaki said in a video posted on X.

Russia shared on the Telegram app, “We believe that the official recognition of Islamic Emirates of Afghanistan will promote the development of productive bilateral cooperation among our countries in many areas.”

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that it would help Kabul to deal with terrorism and drugs by promoting economic support.

“This step indicates that strategic interests always want to extend human rights and international law,” said Maryam Solamkhil, a former member of the Parliament of Afghanistan and former Taliban member.

Afghanistan has seen the decades of institute, including a 20 -year war organized by the US and other forces. This ended when the US withdrew its troops in 2021.

After excluding the government, the Taliban gained power in 2021 and imposed strict Islamic law since then.

Moscow had earlier removed the Taliban from the list of terrorist organizations, and accepted the ambassador from his government.

In 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin referred to the Taliban as “an ally in the fight against terrorism”.

He previously ruled the country during 1996–2001, when he was recognized only by Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Pakistan.

During this tenure, some states have discovered as China and Pakistan, officially accepted the Taliban ambassadors without recognizing the Islamic Emirates, as the country is officially known.

The Taliban government has tightened the civic freedom of Afghans, women and girls, for which they have made international observation.
